HOW ARE YOU DOING?
So...I watched Being Mary Jane today. I am not really a fan because I do not agree with some views carried on the show but today's episode spoke to me which is why this post!
Lots of times people ask us, 'how are you doing'? And the response is 'I am fine', 'great', ‘absolutely amazing'! Sometimes we quote our religious refrains ''I am blessed and highly favored', 'blessed beyond measure', ' I am lifted'...and on and on....No offense I am a believer and I speak the language too...! But the truth is, you are not fine! You lie and say you are happy, you smile and say things are fine...but you are carrying a heavy burden, you are carrying a weight that you cannot share! You are hurting, and the burden is crushing you under its weight...! If you do not speak soon, that weight will snuff the life out of you!.
The world we live in is increasing becoming everyone for himself and God for us all. Even the African community which is inherently communal has become increasing individualistic! It used to be where everyone raises a child and not just the family to whom that child belongs, where you know who your neighbor’s children are and look out for them; those elements have become almost completely eroded by westernization. People are in a hurry to make a living and to make a life such that when we ask the question, ‘how are you doing’?, we do not wait for the answer or we do not actually 'hear' with the ears of our spirit the answer that is not spoken in intelligible syllables...! We do not hear “I am in pain”, “I am disillusioned”, “I am terrified”, ‘I do not want to live any more...’!
…And sometimes we do not really care because the other man's burden is too much to add to ours. This is how society is decimated, people become disenchanted and take their own lives!
So when you ask the question 'how are you doing,’? Please, listen for the answer...listen not with your ears but with your heart. You may not have the solution, but it is possible that you may know someone, who knows someone, who has the solution! When a problem is ventilated, it is actually half solved. Care enough to ask the question, ask the young people around you, ask your neighbor, the gentleman you see looking downcast in church, ask your Pastor because even the Shepherd needs encouragement and you would be shocked at the number of youth on suicide watch and contemplating suicide!
One person at a time, we can make a difference, you may just save a life!
‘How are you doing today’?
